The largest live poker tournaments in the world are held every year at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, Nevada. The tournament began in 1970 as a single event with only 7 players, but by 2006 had grown to a month-long series of events culminating in the Main Event: the $10,000 No Limit Hold ‘em Championship. The Main Event peaked in 2006 with a field of 8,773 and a prize pool of $82,512,162. To give an idea of just how large that prize pool really was: the top twelve finishers in the tournament all became millionaires.

There are plenty of ways to win your seat to the World Series of Poker Main Event through an online poker satellite tournament like the ones running on PokerStars.net. It will be a $50K buy-in tournament, so I don’t expect many casual poker players to take part in it, but I’m sure it will be full of the best names in poker.

On the other end of the spectrum the 2010 WSOP will feature many small buy-in events just like they did last year. With the economy still struggling for most of us the low buy-in events will be a favourable welcome. There will be six tournaments with only a $1K buy-in and they will be open to anyone that wants to join. There will also be the Ladies poker tournament and the Seniors poker tournament with small buy-ins, but they aren’t open to all players.
